# Finding pages, records, files, and chats

> Open Search (Command-K) in the portal or builder to jump to a page, record, file, or chat you are allowed to see.

# Finding pages, records, files, and chats

Press **Command-K** (Windows and Linux: **Ctrl-K**), or click **Search** in the portal drawer, the brand header, or the builder sidebar. Tap **Close** or press Escape to dismiss it.

Opening Search without typing shows shortcuts you already have (Profile, My Files, Work, and the like). Files, chats, and records appear only after you type.

Type what you remember. Results stay inside what that person is allowed to open:

* **Pages** and **forms** from navigation (and pages that are not in the sidebar, if the role can open them)
* **Records** the role can list (same row rules as the rest of the app)
* **My Files** (portal) or project files (builder, Editor and above)
* **Chats** that person already owns. In the builder, Editor and above can also find builder threads and customer chats
* Workspace items such as **Work** (only if that role has Work), plus **People** and **Activity** only if that person already has them in the portal

You do not need to ask chat to find a page or a record. Search never shows another person’s private chats, and it does not show field values beyond the title used to recognize the hit.

**Preview as** a role to confirm what that role can find. Search in Preview uses the previewed role, not your builder access.

List search on **Chats** and **My Chats** still works when you already know you want a thread. See [Finding past chats](/building/finding-past-chats).
